In Defense of Jen Gerard

Recently, Jen made a great video talking about what’s going on inside of the beauty community from a business owner’s perspective. It was very professionally done and overall, very positive. It’s definitely worth a watch. With that being said, I’m not here to talk about the video. Instead, I’m here to talk about what I thought was stale tea: The Karina Kaboom Drama!

Back in 2015, Karina gave a bad review regarding one of Gerard Cosmetic’s lipsticks, saying that it gave “a bump on her mouth” and later said it was an “allergic reaction.” She cursed up a storm, saying a range of unprofessional things that shouldn’t be said in a review, from “it’s such a piece of crap,” to it being a “piece of s*it lipstick.” When it came to the lipgloss, Karina went back and added to the video that the gloss irritated her lips.

First of all, I do reviews both professionally and just for fun from time to time and as I said, this entire review was highly unprofessional. Also, I use their hydramatte liquid lipstick and I love it. I’m not saying it because Jen is my friend. I sincerely like it and I know a lot of other people who do as well. I also want to add that the company (Gerard Cosmetics) would have gladly given her a refund. So, this video was unnecessary on more than level. When I have a bad experience as a customer, I contact the company and try to see if we can resolve the situation. Nine times out of ten, companies want to help you and resolve the situation entirely. You can see Karina’s original video here and judge for yourself.

After her video went up, Manny uploaded a Snapchat which featured him watching Karina’s video with Jen in the back. Jen can be heard calling Karina “ugly.” Afterward, Manny issued an apology on his Snapchat.

Over time, people forgave Manny, but held a grudge against Jen. Now, as a friend of Jen’s I can tell you that she’s apologized at least twice. Here’s the latest attempt.  So no, Jen hasn’t “just now” decided to apologize. The first apology below is on Jen’s official Instagram:

What I don’t get is first of all, why are people so forgiving of Manny and still angry at Jen? (Not that you should flood Manny with hate comments about this, but it’s a question worth asking.) Second, does no one remember that Karina threatened Sanders Kennedy? That was a whole lot worse than calling someone ugly! Like Ashlye Kyle said in the video, could you imagine if a man had threatened a woman the way Karina did to Sanders?

I’m honestly not trying to make a “Who’s Said Worse?” competition here. But let’s think about the ugly comment for a second, haven’t we all said some pretty catty things in the heat of the moment that we wish we could take back? Believe me when I say that I’ve said a lot worse about a person than calling them “ugly” that I wish so badly I could take back. In fact, thinking about those particular situations still makes me cringe.

My last point is this, Jen is my friend and while I do have some personal bias in this, I also have some personal bias toward the word “bully” being thrown around. As someone who was bullied at girl scouts and throughout school until the day she graduated, and was bullied out of both Sunday School and my Youth Group (I still have my faith, I just left that church), I can tell you that I don’t take the words “bully” and “bullying” very lightly. So, if Jen gets called a bully for ONE comment, then I’ve got quite a few storytimes about my years of being bullied that will make you rethink some things.

Once again, I don’t want you to flood Manny’s comment section with hate regarding this, and I don’t want anyone to go after Karina (if you’re able to since her comments are still disabled). I’m asking you all to leave Jen alone and to also look at your own lives and realize that we’ve all made mistakes very similar to what Jen and Manny did.

I’m going to end this on an old quote that I think applies to this situation. If you agree or if you disagree, please sound off in the comments section. I want to hear your opinion. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

“Who are you to judge the life I live? I know I’m not perfect and I don’t live to be, but before you start pointing fingers, make sure your hands are clean.” – Bob Marley

  1. Yes!!!! Great article!!! I find it strange that after 3 (?) years KK is still bringing this up regularly on her channel. I feel Jen has tried to apologize but KK would rather continue her narrative than hear the apology (if she accepts it or not is up to her). Kudos to Jen for handling this is such a professional manner.💗

  2. Very well said Sarah! In a world where bully is thrown around when someone isn’t actually bullying but having a disagreement, its all but lost its meaning. Meanwhile, Jen made one comment, apologized and has tried to move on. KK and her friends continue to dox, harass, slander and defame Jen and GC; but that’s not bullying. Its not a pissing match as to whom has done or said worse, its now time to heal and move on. If it weren’t for Jen and GC KK wouldn’t have the notoriety that she now and she has to beat that poor horse for form at this point. KK needs to just move on at this point, Jen has actively tried to reach out to her to have some form of closer and she refuses, so Jen has done all she can do and the ball is now in KK court.

  3. I totally agree with you. When Jen posted that video, I didn’t really look at the comments. Now looking at the comments bringing up the whole bullying thing, all I can is wow. People can still hold a grudge for a comment that was made years ago, Jen has already apologized. Like what more do the people want. Then she goes out of her way, apologizing or replying to each comment being left in that video about the Karina thing. Just goes to show you that she isn’t a bad character.

  4. Could not agree more! I felt so bad that Jen’s great video turned into comments about Karina! Why do people feel bad for Karina? Do they not realize she is,to this day friends with Kuckian? She’s never ONCE spoken out against him, and she’s said things so much worse than just calling someone “ugly.”

Now, to be honest I KINDA LIKE KARINA. I used to really enjoy her videos, because of how she defends Jeffree star (her bread and butter.) But this situation needs to be put to rest. Karina re tells this story of Manny and Jen “coming for her over a bad review” every now and then, so she will get the sympathy of those who hasn’t been around and saw it all happen in the beginning.

And if im not mistaken, did Karina not say that Jen reached out to her after the review and tried to replace the “faulty” products??? Karina said this. Jen offered to send her several products in the line. But Karina COULD NOT ACCEPT THAT. she wanted to smear them! She wanted to hurt her business. Ugh. Anyway, I agree so much with this and hope Jen goes on to do great things.

    1. Yeah, Jen would have gladly refunded the products. I understand you kind of liking her though. There’s no shame in “Sarah’s Place”! Besides, I used to be a fan myself. I’ll be doing a series of blogs soon in which I talk about if people can change, starting with YouTubers such as Karina & working my way to the Average Joe. The Idea was inspired by the YouTuber Metamorphosis Rox. Thank you for stopping by!
